The
Happy Goat Farm is located across from Bare Hill and Vine Valley
about 1/2 mile from Canandaigua Lake, the jewel of New York's fingerlakes.
The farm was established in 1993 and has always been growing organically.
Although, I do not sell enough to require certification, I follow
established organic guidelines and standards. Happy Goat Farm has
1/2 acre of garlic, three polyhouses, and about one acre of fruits
and veggies in production. HGF's beautiful, huge barns were built
in the early 1900's and are currently being stabilized and partially
restored. One of the smaller barns was built specifically to dry
raspberries. Part of the barn has a slatted floor and is now used
for drying garlic. The Old Goat has another job (urbanforestryllc.com)
which allows him to spend his free time and money on the farm.
In 2003
we had an intern, Merrill Gates, who did a great job growing and
marketing our produce. In 2005 we welcomed Aly Stolpman as the intern
and had another successful year. Once again, the 2006 growing season
has us all excited. We will be offering our subscription and delivery
service again as it proved to be a successful and convenient mode
of operation.
Contact the
Old Goat if you are interested in applying for an internship or
if
you'd like to subscribe for the 2006 growing season (happygoatfarm2005@hotmail.com).
Our mutual
dedication to cultivating and consuming organically-grown produce
is exptremely important. We appreciate all of your support and send
gracious thanks.
Farm Activities:
Canandaigua
Farmers market
Happy Goat Farm was a vendor at the Canandaigua
Farmers Market for a number of years. The market has since grown
and is building a strong following in Canandaigua. HGF has also
participated in Organic Day at the Market at the Rochester Public
Market and Farm to School Farmers Market in Canandaigua.
Fall
Festival of Seeking Common Ground
Happy Goat Farm has sold vegetables and fruits at Seeking
Common Ground’s annual Fall Festival. The festival attracts
many people for a day of autumnal festivities as well as an invigorating
barn dance.
SARE
Grant
Happy Goat Farm cooperatively wrote
the Farm to Cafeteria grant that was funded by USDA and SARE. The
grant will help bring together farmers and institutional food buyers
in the Canandaigua Lake Foodshed.
Fox
Run Garlic Festival
Happy Goat Farm has been a garlic and flower vendor at the
Fox Run Garlic Festival for a number of years and will be there
again in 2006. The Festival is on Seneca Lake and is a great place
to sample New York State wine as well as a wide selection of garlic
and garlic products from the region.
Farm
to School
Happy Goat Farm has provided vegetables to St. Mary’s
School in Canandaigua as part of the on-going Farm to School program
started there by Seeking Common Ground. Students help prepare the
meals which are comprised of products from local farms. These meals
feed the students and teachers of the school one day per month.
